Lighting Design: Sheron Luo

This design was intended as a simple, elegant lighting approach which reinforced the twisting psychological timbre of the work. The narrative centred around shifting power dynamics. My work was intended to emphasize the emotional weight and transitions across the production.

Design Concept & Execution

I chose to deploy visual contrast to enhance the disparate positions of characters in the work.

Analyzing the script, I considered how Cassie and Rose’s financial struggles would inform the lighting of their home. I took the notion that the characters might minimize lighting to save money, and created a dim, shadowy atmosphere for this aspect of the set.

I contrasted this with the design related to the character Mark; a man of personal wealth and entitlement. This element of set design involved bright, somewhat brash lighting, reflecting this character's use of his power in the world, and reinforcing the sense of control he sought.

Each location had a distinct lighting style:

  • Cassie & Rose’s Flat – Dim, minimal lighting, symbolizing financial hardship.

  • Mark & Tim’s Flat – Bright, unrestricted lighting, emphasizing power and entitlement.

  • Other Scenes – Streetlamp effects, surreal hues, eerie green glows, and backlit monologues, shaping mood and narrative shifts.

A single LED lamp during transitions subtly changed colors, ensuring smooth scene shifts.

Problem-Solving & Efficiency

There was a very short timeframe for rigging (4-5 hours). Actors were not available for a majority of this period. This allowed some efficiency in preparation and set up. Once the actors arrived, only minor adjustments were required.

Outcome & Reflection

The lighting seemed to successfully shape and depict the power dynamics. The contrast between dim constraint and bright excess was a defining element. The simplicity impacted and contributed to the storytelling.
