Moondrunk was intended as an immersive, dreamlike experience. The lighting was conceived to play a crucial role in shifting between reality and fantasy. The scratch performance took place at Black Lab, an intimate, immersive space where the audience could move freely and experience the lighting from different angles. The full-length production at Platform Theatre, London in April 2025 will entail a refinement and expansion these ideas, and the techniques and tools to present them.

Design Concept & Execution
The lighting shaped four distinct environments:
-
The Woman’s Room – A dimly lit space, with a single warm lamp and cold moonlight creeping through the window, symbolizing the pull of the dream world.
-
The Street – Harsh streetlights and neon flickers painted a rigid, controlled reality.
-
The Moon Realm – A soft celestial glow, pulsing Cancer constellation projections, and phantom blue flames created an ethereal, mystical space.
-
Return to the Street – A warm dawn wash signified transformation, with a flickering streetlamp as a lingering trace of the dream.

Problem-Solving & Evolution
The Black Lab setup required adaptable lighting that worked from multiple angles for an immersive audience. Layered cue programming was used for smooth transitions, and pre-rendered effects allowed for quick refinements. For the Platform Theatre staging, the design will evolve to enhance depth and scale.
Outcome & Next Steps
I felt the lighting was strong in blurring the boundaries between reality and dreams. I hoped to immerse the audience in a surreal, shifting world. The April 2025 performance at Platform Theatre, I hope to further refine these elements, seeking to deepen the storytelling through light.
